LYNDEN — The National Indian Gaming Commission announced Monday that the Nooksack Northwood Casino, forced to shut down by federal order in June, has been allowed to reopen under four conditions of compliance. The 10-year-old casino at 9750 Northwood Rd. Reportedly reopened at noon Saturday, after an agreement became official on Friday. The Nooksack Tribe will reopen its Northwood Casino to the public on Monday, June 1.
The casino will reopen at 9 a.m Monday with safety protocols that will include taking the temperature of everyone entering Northwood, reduced hours to allow for sanitizing, mask-wearing requirements for employees and guests, physical-distancing guides on floors, and Plexiglass dividers between slot machines and at the table games, according to an announcement on Tuesday night, May 26.
Its Chefs restaurant will be open for dining, but its Prime Buffet and Thirst Bar will remain closed for now, the announcement said.
A limited number of table games will be open to ensure physical distancing, according to the announcement.

“While no protocol can completely eliminate risks, we are doing everything we can to create a safe and fun place for our guests and staff,” the announcement said.
For now, the Northwood Casino’s hours will be 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
The tribe closed its casino at 9750 Northwood Road, north of Lynden, on March 17, saying it wouldn’t reopen until the COVID-19 outbreak was under control in Washington state.
A week later, its tribal council approved a shelter-in-place order for all people living on tribal trust land. The council has extended that order until noon Sunday, May 31.
No tribal members have tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to the tribe’s Monday, May 26, public health memo. Its Nooksack Health Clinic has conducted 348 tests — with 316 negative results and 32 pending.
A large portion of those tests occurred last week, when its health clinic nurses conducted 118 drive-thru COVID-19 tests in one day, primarily for Nooksack staff as part of what the tribe called its safe start back-to-work plan, the tribe said on its communications page on Facebook.
The tribe joins Lummi Nation in reopening its casino. The Silver Reef Casino Resort reopened to the public on Friday, May 22, with social distancing and other protective measures in place.
Silver Reef, at 4876 Haxton Way near Ferndale, closed March 17 to help contain the new coronavirus pandemic.
The Nooksack Tribe said it has more than 1,800 enrolled members and is the largest employer in eastern Whatcom County.
